Make Your Home Part of the Neighborhood Holiday Celebration

Make Your Home Part of the Neighborhood Holiday Celebration

Whether you go small and simple or big and bold, hanging lights on and around your home are a great way to celebrate the holidays.  No two homes are alike; however, a few lighting tips will come in handy no matter how you choose to light up your neighborhood.

Plan Ahead

Take a picture of your house from the street.  Consider the features of your home and create a plan to incorporate these highlights within your display.  Consider your door, your windows and your landscaping.  How can the lights best accentuate your favorite parts of the house?

Measure Twice, Hang Once

In order to make sure you have an adequate number of lights, take the time to get an accurate measurement of the areas you will be using for your display.  It is better to spend a few extra minutes measuring and doing the math than spending a few extra hours making a return trip to buy more lights.

Plug It In

When hanging lights outside where they will be exposed to the elements, assuring proper electrical sources is essential.  All outdoor lights should be plugged into a GFCI protected outlets.  In addition, consider using conveniently spaced power stakes to avoid having cords strung all over your yard.

Hang Your Lights on Plastic

Hanging lights with hammer and nails can take a toll on your house.  Use plastic clips, which will safely and efficiently secure your decorations in place.

Ask a Friend to Help

When the time comes to put up the lights, it’s best to have a friend there to help.  Stay on the ground as much as possible.  When you do climb a ladder, an extra set of hands will keep you safer and make the work go more quickly.

Big or small, a light display is a perfect way to share your holiday cheer with the neighbors.  Embrace the opportunity and make your home part of the celebration.

Introducing Our Latest Project: The Wickford Project

Introducing Our Latest Project: The Wickford Project

Can a home from MW Designs be simultaneously dynamic, peaceful, exciting, grand and cozy?

Our Wickford project proves that the answer to this question is a resounding “Yes!”

This custom home, is full of surprises. Surprises which tell a tale of two houses.  A tale of a public home for entertaining and a private one for daily living.

Guests enter the Wickford home through a six-foot wide pivoting stainless steel door.  This impressive entry way ushers them into the main living area.  This area includes coffered ceilings and vistas.  In addition, this gathering area will impress your guests with its free standing horizontal fireplace and stone slab wall.

The living area also serves as a gateway into more of the home’s public area.  A cozy covered terrace and lap pool and waterfalls await those who venture beyond the main living area.

Also awaiting guests at the Wickford project is the dining room, the heart of the home.  Friends dine together here in a circular arrangement that provides cozy ambience and pleasing energy.

When the entertaining ends the private side of the home awaits.  This part of the house provides not only a sanctuary for the residents. It also seems to be a second complete home.

For example, the family/media/library room is a quiet area accented with private art created by family members.  The area also includes favorite keepsakes and books in a wall to wall built in library.  Beyond this intimate space lies the gym and the family bedrooms.

The unique design of the Wickford Project gives its residents the best of both worlds.  This custom home from MW Designs provides a public face for welcoming friends and family in a grand fashion.  At the same time, the layout offers the family a place of respite and solitude when it is needed. Contact MW Designs to find out how they can plan a unique home that meets your needs as well.

Use These Tips to Stress Proof Your Move

Use These Tips to Stress Proof Your Move

You’ve decided to build a new home with MW Design and Construction.  Soon you will be living in the home of your dreams.  However, there will be some stressful times as you move to your new residence.  Here are some tips to help make the road to your new home less rocky.

Give Yourself Time

If it is possible, allow yourself at least eight weeks to prepare for your move. This time frame gives time to take care of all the details you need to with a minimal amount of stress.

Clear Out the Clutter

This is a good step to get the moving process rolling.  It will give you some added momentum to know that you won’t be moving with items that you don’t need in your new location. In addition, this process helps you leave the past behind and move onto your future.

Get Organized

It will reduce the stress if you make a list of everything that needs to be done to prepare for the move.  Once your list is complete, plan a weekly schedule of which items you will do each week.

Ask For Help

It may be difficult to ask for assistance, but most people have been through the same process and understand what you are going through.  Ask friends and family if they can share a few hours of help.

Go With the Flow

No matter how organized and prepared you are, your moving train will inevitably go off the tracks at some point during your trip.  Take the unexpected in stride.  Allowing for some wiggle room will ensure that you can adjust and feel calm even when chaos abounds.

Be Prepared to Feel Uprooted

You will be living in chaos for a good part of the process.  When it becomes overwhelming, remember that you have done the work, and you will soon be in the home of your dreams.

Congratulations on your new home.  You will be living there before you know it.  Until then, relax and enjoy the ride.

A Custom Home Fits You Like A Glove

A Custom Home Fits You Like A Glove

A great home is one that fits its residents perfectly.  Given the fact that no two people are exactly the same, it stands to reason that the perfect home is actually different for everyone and cannot be mass produced.  If you are looking for a home that fits your unique personality, consider building a custom home.

It is Planned Around You

The planning for a custom home doesn’t begin until you enter the picture.  Any ideas or special needs you have for your new residence can be included in the plan.  If you want an elaborate flooring scheme or one more simple, the choice is yours.  Custom planning can be adapted to the vision you have, whether it is energy efficiency or a unique flooring pattern or anything else your heart desires.

Going the Extra Mile

Each custom home is a unique project.  As a result of this uniqueness, those involved in the building process approach it as a one of a kind endeavor rather than a run of the mill house that they put together many times a month.  This perspective leads to a greater attention to detail and a higher quality product.

Your Home Sweet Home

It only makes sense for your home to be different from your neighbor’s home.  While you need a giant room to host numerous parties, your neighbor may need a specially-lighted library to house his antique book collection. A custom home will help each of you accentuate your special interests and personalities.

With a custom home, you can tailor a residence to match your needs exactly, making it a place where you fit perfectly.  If you are looking for a dream home like this, consider building a custom home with MW Designs.
