Make Your Home Part of the Neighborhood Holiday Celebration

Whether you go small and simple or big and bold, hanging lights on and around your home are a great way to celebrate the holidays.  No two homes are alike; however, a few lighting tips will come in handy no matter how you choose to light up your neighborhood.

Plan Ahead

Take a picture of your house from the street.  Consider the features of your home and create a plan to incorporate these highlights within your display.  Consider your door, your windows and your landscaping.  How can the lights best accentuate your favorite parts of the house?

Measure Twice, Hang Once

In order to make sure you have an adequate number of lights, take the time to get an accurate measurement of the areas you will be using for your display.  It is better to spend a few extra minutes measuring and doing the math than spending a few extra hours making a return trip to buy more lights.

Plug It In

When hanging lights outside where they will be exposed to the elements, assuring proper electrical sources is essential.  All outdoor lights should be plugged into a GFCI protected outlets.  In addition, consider using conveniently spaced power stakes to avoid having cords strung all over your yard.

Hang Your Lights on Plastic

Hanging lights with hammer and nails can take a toll on your house.  Use plastic clips, which will safely and efficiently secure your decorations in place.

Ask a Friend to Help

When the time comes to put up the lights, it’s best to have a friend there to help.  Stay on the ground as much as possible.  When you do climb a ladder, an extra set of hands will keep you safer and make the work go more quickly.

Big or small, a light display is a perfect way to share your holiday cheer with the neighbors.  Embrace the opportunity and make your home part of the celebration.
